Features: European travel agencies brought tourists from various countries to the entrance of Fox Cave. The pungent odor was overwhelming, causing discomfort. Unwittingly, this stirred the curiosity of alternative travelers, who proposed a competition to sit silently in the cave. The rule was that whoever couldn’t endure would have to leave and pay one dollar. A Frenchman, a Jew, and a Wenzhou person each agreed to enter. Shortly after, the Frenchman came out and placed one dollar at the entrance. A little later, the Jew emerged and paid. Then, an old fox came out, took a deep breath, and also paid one dollar and ten cents. Finally, the Wenzhou person came out and took the three dollars, collapsing by the roadside unconscious.
This book is a personal account of the Wenzhou phenomenon and the spirit of Wenzhou people. As the author is a well-known writer in our city and has experience in the business world, with numerous connections in both the cultural and political spheres, his unique perspective and personal experiences distinguish this book from many previous works on the "Wenzhou phenomenon" that focus solely on business. Instead, it possesses the literary depth and intellectual rigor of a writer’s keen observation of life and survival, embodying both the emotional and rational self-reflection of Wenzhou people.
The book introduces the history of Wenzhou, its present-day state, and the turbulent years, as well as its distinctive dialect and customs of food, clothing, housing, and daily life. The author provides insightful portrayals of individual Wenzhou people and their collective image, with many of the stories and events being his personal experiences or observations. Through multiple perspectives, he presents a three-dimensional view of life in Wenzhou.
In terms of style, the author uses vivid and expressive language with a humorous tone to narrate the story, giving readers a sense of the "wise old man" demeanor of someone who has "seen it all." The entire book is written in a smooth, accessible, and engaging manner, filled with fun and entertainment.
Actually, you don't understand the Wenzhou people.
