Figure painting, one of the three major painting genres of Chinese painting, refers to painting that takes human figures as the main subject, abbreviated as "Figure Painting." It emerged earlier than landscape painting and flower-and-bird painting. When appreciating, one should primarily consider the environment and atmosphere in the painting, observing whether the figures are depicted vividly and realistically, embodying both form and spirit—known as "transmitting the spirit." For example, the court ladies in Tang Yin's "Flute Blowing Painting" are graceful in appearance and dignified in demeanor; the numerous court ladies in Qiu Ying's "Figure Story Painting" exhibit diverse expressions and a light, refreshing style; Min Zheng's "Eight Sons Watching Lanterns Painting" features an extraordinary composition and innovative techniques, with the entire scene drenched in ink and brimming with vitality.
Among the three major painting genres in traditional Chinese painting, figure painting plays an extremely important role. The earliest figure paintings in China appeared during the Neolithic period, drawn as decorative patterns on items such as painted pottery. Although their forms were extremely simple and rustic, they already began to focus on reflecting real life and demonstrated a certain degree of imaginative and conceptual abstraction.
This figure painting album carefully selects masterpieces from the Ming and Qing dynasties, each accompanied by information such as the artist's name, subject matter, creation date, material, dimensions, technique, collector, and influence index, making it highly valuable. The album features a novel design and exquisite text. The introductory section, "Getting Closer to Chinese Painting," provides readers with knowledge about the painting, appreciation, and collection of Chinese painting, as well as guidance on using this book.
During the compilation of this album, support was received from many experts and connoisseurs. Gratitude is expressed to them here.
