Ling Mengchu always faced difficulties in his official career, similar to Feng Menglong, and thus differed greatly from authentic traditional scholars in spirit, showing significant rebelliousness in his writings and works. What established his important position in literary history were the vernacular short story collections he compiled, Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio (First Edition) and Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio (Second Edition). Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio (First Edition) was widely welcomed after its completion, and at the strong invitation of publishers, Ling Mengchu continued to write Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio (Second Edition). In the second edition, he no longer adapted old works but created them independently. It expressed a stronger sense of urban society and a more forceful challenge and resistance to outdated traditional concepts compared to the Three Words series. Additionally, the material in the Second Edition was closer to daily life, making it more conducive to exploring the depths of human nature. Later works such as The Story of the Stone and The Scholars achieved even greater success by developing in this direction.
