Features: Shen Zhou (1427-1509), styled Qinan, styled Shitian, late styled Baishi Weng, was born into a family of calligraphers and painters in Suzhou during the Ming Dynasty. He initially learned from his family's traditions and then broadly absorbed the strengths of various schools. He pioneered the "rough brush ink-wash" style, becoming the leader of the "Wumen School of Painting" and being renowned alongside Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin, and Qiu Ying as the "Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty." His paintings and techniques were superb, with a profound and robust style characterized by a (). Shen Zhou left behind an immense number of masterpieces, such as "Lushan High View," which features a grand and expansive composition, intricate details, yet vibrant and meticulous; and "Imitation of Huang Gongwang's Fuchun Mountain Residence," which showcases vigorous and heavy brushwork, bright and colorful colors, and a majestic and powerful atmosphere.
Shen Zhou's paintings made two major contributions to traditional landscape painting:
First, he merged the southern and northern styles, promoting the tradition of literati painting. For example, his rough brush landscape paintings incorporated the forcefulness and hardness of the Zhe School, enriching the mountains and valleys with a sense of resilience and momentum. He integrated the vastness and richness of the Southern Song Dynasty with the grandeur and clarity of the Northern School, transforming the emotions he expressed from a quiet and detached tone to a broader and more harmonious one.
Second, he further combined poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Shen Zhou's calligraphy, influenced by Huang Tingjian, had a "forceful, extraordinary, and sharp" style, which was highly similar to and harmonious with the vigorous and profound nature of his landscape paintings. He also applied the techniques of calligraphic wrist and brush movements to his paintings. Shen Zhou was also a poet, and in his later years, his style became "vigorous and dynamic, rich and aged." He combined this poetic style with his artistic expression, making his paintings more imbued with poetic charm.
