Features: We use the term "ethical and cultural turn" to reflect the trends of the postmodern intellectual movement that emerged since the 1980s. We select three French postmodern thinkers with clear academic lineage and a shared philosophical orientation as case studies to analyze this ethical and cultural turn. Among these three postmodern thinkers and their ethical and cultural conceptions, there is an embodiment of pan-tragic spirit, gnosis, and moral perfectionism. The three thinkers recognize the importance of intimacy and a sense of life for the freedom of modern individuals. The freedom they understand is a humble freedom that relies on others and is indeterminate.
