Patient's question:
Doctor, I got pregnant a few weeks ago, but unfortunately, I had a miscarriage. When I had an examination at the hospital, the doctor said that my miscarriage was due to a uterine septum. I'm a bit confused.Doctor's answer:
Uterine septum is a manifestation of incomplete cavitation during the congenital development of the uterus, characterized by a fibrous tissue-based ridge projecting into the uterine cavity, deep uterine horns, and a relatively small uterine cavity. Pelvic color Doppler ultrasound or hysterosalpingography can reveal an indentation at the level of the cervix. Diagnosis is confirmed through hysteroscopy. Uterine septum is the most common uterine malformation and is associated with poorer pregnancy outcomes. It can lead to miscarriage, preterm birth, breech presentation, premature rupture of membranes, placenta previa, postpartum abnormal bleeding, and intrauterine growth restriction.
