Can you have sex when you are pregnant?

Patient's question:

My wife is six months pregnant. In the first three months, I was afraid it might be bad for the baby, so I didn't dare to have sex with her. Later, because of my busy work, my wife moved to her mother's house, but we still didn't get a chance. Now we are approaching the late stage of pregnancy, and I don't know if we can have sex. After all, there are natural instincts involved.
What kind of help do I need: Can I still have sex while pregnant?

Doctor's answer:

The first three months of pregnancy are absolutely not suitable for sexual intercourse. It is also best to avoid sexual activity for three months, but sexual intercourse is permissible during the second trimester of pregnancy.
In the first three months of pregnancy, affected by early pregnancy symptoms, most pregnant women's sexual desire and sexual response are inhibited to varying degrees. Additionally, the placenta is not fully developed at this stage, making it easier to experience a miscarriage. Therefore, during the unstable first trimester of pregnancy, it is not advisable for couples to engage in sexual activity.
However, once pregnancy stabilizes, early pregnancy symptoms usually subside, and vaginal discharge increases. For couples without a history of premature birth or habitual miscarriage, sexual activity is entirely feasible. Of course, it is important to avoid rough movements and maintain a gentle approach with moderate frequency.
In the later stages of pregnancy, particularly during the 9th to 10th month, the risk of premature birth due to sexual activity is extremely high, and it is recommended to cease sexual activity. This is because the cervix becomes more prone to dilation, increasing the risk of infection and premature rupture of membranes, which can lead to premature birth.
