Deng Guangming (Gong San) was a celebrated historian of the 20th century, holding a significant position in the history of Chinese scholarship, hailed as the "Master of Song History" and the "Unparalleled Master of his Generation." In his early years, he studied under Fu Sinian, Hu Shi, and Chen Yinke. His life was dedicated to exploring the depths of history, resulting in a vast body of scholarly works, with his primary focus on the Song, Liao, and Jin Dynasties, particularly the Song Dynasty. Upon entering the field of history, he made a remarkable debut with his Song Dynasty research, earning high praise from Hu Shi. In the 1940s, Chen Yinke remarked in the preface to Deng Guangming’s Examination of the Administrative Officials of the Song Dynasty: "His diligence in research and the rigor of his arguments surpass all contemporaries who study the Song Dynasty. His meticulous thinking and unwavering determination transcend ordinary achievements. It is certain that he will be one of the most influential figures in the establishment of new Song studies." Chen’s laudatory praise and high expectations were the highest accolades a young historian could receive. Gu Jiegang also praised Deng in Contemporary Chinese Historiography as having "pioneered the study of Song history." Half a century later, Zhou Yiliang remarked that Deng "mastered the Song Dynasty" and was "the most authoritative scholar of Song history in the 20th century, both in China and abroad," with few contemporaries equally capable of specializing so comprehensively and deeply in a single historical period. His academic achievements were not only highly regarded by the historical community but also admired by the literary world. Mao Dun once praised Chronological Annotations on the Lyrics of Xin Jiaxun as a "timeless work." Deng’s historical research was marked by a broad perspective and innovative approaches. He tirelessly explored major issues in ancient Chinese history, particularly the political, economic, military, cultural, and institutional histories of the Song, Liao, and Jin periods, as well as significant historical figures and systems. Throughout his life, he delved into various aspects of Song, Liao, and Jin history, publishing numerous monographs and hundreds of papers, driving the study of these dynasties ever deeper. Additionally, he made significant contributions to the collation and study of historical texts. Over half a century, his academic works have withstood the test of time, and his Collected Works possess an "unshakable historical character." His writings were imbued with patriotism and a sense of historical responsibility. In the 1930s, when he began his career in historiography, the nation and people were facing a critical juncture. In the preface to his Selected Works in his later years, he recalled: "Comparing the fate of the two Song dynasties to the plight of the Chinese nation since the Opium War—while inappropriate today, it was how most people viewed it at the time. It was precisely in this context that I chose the history of the Song and Liao-Jin confrontation as my primary research topic." With this sense of national salvation and historical responsibility, he chose his field of study, consciously integrating his life’s work into the destiny of the nation. His academic career began with the study of Chen Liang, focusing on the great figures of his time—Wang Anshi, Yue Fei, Xin Qiji, and Chen Liang—as well as major historical events. Since its inception, the field of history has faced numerous challenges. Yet, there have always been those who devoted their lives to historical research, working tirelessly and leaving behind a rich legacy. Deng was one such figure. Carrying forward the academic legacy he dedicated his life to is the responsibility of his successors, including his students. His Collected Works stands as a monumental achievement in Song, Liao, and Jin history in the 20th century and will serve as a solid foundation for the development of historiography in the new millennium.
