What are the types of vulvitis?

Patient's question:

At night, vaginal inflammation itches very much. The examination said it was vulvitis. What types of vulvitis are there?

Doctor's answer:

1. Trichomoniasis vulvitis: Itching of the vulva worsens at night, with increased discharge that is yellow and has a foul odor. Examination reveals scratch marks and erythematous skin lesions on the vulva. The vaginal fluid is slightly grayish-green, thin, and foamy, caused by the decomposition of glycogen producing gas. The vaginal mucosa is congested, with small petechiae visible in the deeper layers. It is often accompanied by mixed infections with fungi and other pathogens. If the urinary tract is also infected, symptoms such as dysuria, urinary frequency, and lower abdominal discomfort may occur.
2. Candidal vulvitis: It typically presents with severe vulvar itching and excessive discharge. The vaginal walls are covered with large amounts of white, cottage cheese-like or curd-like discharge, with red, swollen, congested, or spotted mucosa. Candidal vaginitis can lead to female infertility.
