What time can I have an amniocentesis?

Patient's question:

I am 17 weeks pregnant. When is a good time to have an amniocentesis?

Doctor's answer:

Disease Analysis: We call this method prenatal diagnosis. The most conventional method is performed around the 18th to 20th week of pregnancy. We extract amniotic fluid, centrifuge it, and select fetal cells for culture. After culturing them to a sufficient quantity, we proceed with chromosome identification.
Guidance: Why do we choose this stage? Of course, the earlier the diagnosis, the better it is for the mother. However, this detection method is rarely used. It can be performed before the 14th week of pregnancy if the patient has previously given birth to a child with such conditions or if the mother has a history of delivering a child with abnormal genetic predisposition diseases. In such cases, placental villi can be taken via transabdominal route for chromosome examination. However, this method has not yet become a conventional chromosome detection method and is only conducted within the scope of research. It is also one of the safer methods. However, the most widely used method is to extract amniotic fluid between the 18th and 22nd weeks of pregnancy. This stage is chosen because the amniotic fluid is most abundant, allowing the fetus to move freely in the uterine cavity. The ample volume of amniotic fluid provides sufficient space, making it less likely to harm the child during the puncture.
Lifestyle Care: Amniocentesis Procedure: First, blood is drawn for testing, with results available in just 3 minutes. Then, you take the report to the outpatient clinic. You wait in the observation room in groups of five, change clothes and shoes, and proceed to the operating room one by one. The doctor first locates the fetus using ultrasound, then sterilizes the abdomen, and performs the needle insertion. I was too nervous to watch, but I heard they took three tubes of fluid. The procedure takes only 5-8 minutes and is completely painless. The doctors said they finished it with a laugh, which made me feel less anxious. After the procedure, I returned to the observation room to rest for a while before going home. However, one person didn’t complete the procedure on the same day because of some inflammation, and the doctor advised her to come back in a week for reexamination. So, if you need to undergo amniocentesis, pay attention to your diet and hydration before the surgery. I am now eagerly awaiting the results on July 23rd.
