Features: Since the revision of this dictionary was published in 1984, 15 years have passed, and the content has inevitably become outdated. Therefore, the Commercial Press Lexicography Research Center took the opportunity to revise the dictionary, incorporating new developments in English vocabulary and changes in English teaching in China while maintaining its concise and selective features. The revisions include:
1. Adding over 1,000 newly emerged terms (including words and compound words) and new definitions for existing terms in recent years to keep the dictionary updated with the latest developments in contemporary English and the learning needs in China.
2. Removing outdated terms, adding or adjusting some definitions, rewriting entries for can, shall, will, etc., replacing some outdated examples, and adding new examples based on the meanings to make the dictionary more suitable for language learning.
3. Marking important and secondary vocabulary with ☆ and * symbols for easy reference and memorization.
4. Removing names and places from the main text of the dictionary and adding three new appendices at the end—besides retaining the original "Irregular Verbs List"—these include the "Common English Names List," "Major Cities in Countries and Regions Around the World," and the "Flag Collection of Countries and Regions Around the World." The dictionary contains over 15,000 entries, with more than 1,000 of them being newly emerged terms or new definitions derived from existing terms in recent years.
