Features: Rosin is one of the important products in the forest chemical industry, an important natural product, and also a renewable resource. This book introduces the classification and properties of rosin, domestic and international situations, reprocessing development trends, the general types of chemical reactions of abietic acid in rosin, its composition and content, properties, physical constants, and purification methods. It also covers rosin chemical products, preparation processes, and applications of rosin in the rubber industry, coating industry, adhesives, and pharmaceuticals. This book can serve as a reference for researchers engaged in rosin-related research and students and faculty in relevant fields at universities. It can also be used by workers in industries such as papermaking, resins, coatings, inks, rubber, soaps, adhesives, mineral processing, pesticides, and fragrances, which use forest chemical products derived from pine forests as raw materials.
[Rationale] Rosin is one of the most important products in China's forest chemical industry, an important natural product, and a renewable resource. Based on its source, rosin can be classified into three types: gum rosin, wood rosin, and tall oil rosin, with gum rosin being of the highest quality. Currently, the global annual production of rosin is approximately 110×10? to 120×10? tons. China has abundant pine resources, with a forest area of about 1600×10? hectares, and an annual tapping capacity of 40×10? to 50×10? tons, making it the largest producer and exporter of gum rosin in the world. In addition to meeting domestic demand, China exports tens of thousands of tons of rosin annually. Due to favorable climate and ample labor, the development of gum rosin in China holds vast prospects. Since the 1940s, people have utilized the active groups—carboxyl and conjugated double bonds—in the molecular structure of rosin for chemical modification, producing a series of deep-processed products, such as dibasic acid, a butadiene rubber polymerization emulsifier used in the automotive tire industry; hydrogenated rosin, a tackifying resin for adhesive industries; and maleic rosin, a sizing agent for papermaking industries. Currently, global rosin consumption is primarily concentrated in adhesives and tackifying resins, inks and coatings, paper sizing agents, synthetic rubber, electronic and plastic processing, food, and pharmaceuticals.
Based on the natural characteristics of rosin and its vast development potential, this book focuses on rosin and provides a detailed introduction to rosin and its deep-processed products, making it one of the most comprehensive books on rosin to date. It serves as an important reference for scientists and engineers engaged in rosin-related research and students and faculty in relevant fields at universities. It also holds certain reference value for workers in industries such as papermaking, resins, coatings, inks, rubber, soaps, adhesives, mineral processing, pesticides, and fragrances, which use forest chemical products derived from pine forests as raw materials.
During the writing process, the authors referred to a large number of domestic and international literature and research findings. Professor Chen Fuheng provided many valuable suggestions and guidance for the book, for which we express our gratitude. Due to the limited expertise of the authors, there may be omissions or errors in the book. We sincerely invite readers to point out any shortcomings so that they can be corrected in future editions.
