Features: This book provides a detailed introduction to the sketches of Adolf Menzel from various periods. Classic works cannot be fully explained or expressed through language and words. I would like to share some preliminary thoughts on a few key aspects, hoping to spark further insights and help readers to independently appreciate and savor the works. Adolf Menzel is considered one of the greatest painters after Albrecht Dürer, a master of the German Renaissance. His works cover a wide range of themes, deeply portraying the lives, living conditions, and social customs of all strata of German society, particularly his depictions of industrial workers, which were rare among European painters of his time. Steel Rolling Mill is an outstanding work in the history of world art that portrays scenes of labor, and Menzel once titled it Contemporary Giants.
The Barbizon School, active in the 1830s to 1860s, was a group of painters who gathered in the forests near Barbizon, on the outskirts of Paris, due to poverty or disillusionment, and dedicated themselves to landscape painting. These artists took inspiration from 17th-century Dutch landscapes and contemporary British landscapes, emphasizing outdoor sketches and striving to realistically depict natural scenes. They excelled at using refined techniques to capture the vibrant and varied tones of the atmosphere in nature, with their works featuring grand compositions and profound artistic connotations. In art history, this group is known as the "Barbizon School." The works of some painters from the Barbizon School directly inspired the outdoor light techniques of Impressionist artists.
