Features: This book provides a detailed introduction to Adolf Menzel's sketches from various periods. Adolf Menzel (1815-1905): Adolf Menzel was the greatest painter in Germany since Albrecht Dürer after the Renaissance. At the age of 90, he was given a grand funeral in the German imperial palace, a privilege usually reserved only for marshals and generals. Menzel was not only a master of drawing in the 19th century but also a great painter of oil paintings, etchings, pastels, and watercolors. His works extensively and profoundly depicted the social life and customs of Germany, particularly his portrayals of industrial production and workers' lives, which were rare among European artists of his time. Menzel was born into a printing workshop family in the small eastern German city of Breslau. To nurture his son's talent for painting, his father moved the printing workshop to Berlin, the capital of Prussia at the time, where Menzel worked on lithographs. To further his studies, he enrolled in the Berlin Academy of Arts at the age of 18 and later, due to family poverty, rose to prominence through self-taught painting. Menzel's career began with lithography, and he illustrated Goethe's writings, which led to his successful admission into the Berlin Young Artists Association. Later, he spent 10 years creating 600 illustrations for "The Life of Frederick the Great," earning the title of a historical painter and gaining fame across Europe. At the age of 21, Menzel began oil painting, selecting themes from real life and becoming a sensitive genre painter. In the 1850s, Menzel traveled extensively throughout Europe's artistic landmarks, particularly his meeting with the French realist master Gustave Courbet, which made his art more directly focused on contemporary reality. In 1875, he created the realist masterpiece "Rolling Mill." Menzel was a renowned master of drawing, known for his rigorous modeling, lively brushwork, and expressive style. In his later years, Menzel enjoyed high prestige. At the age of 70, he was appointed Honorary Rector of the Berlin University, and at 71, he was elected an Honorary Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in Russia. Menzel's life motto was: "Our destiny is only to climb, and reaching the peak is the task of the next generation."
