Features: Tracked for three years recently, Lu Xinzhi presents another stormy figure after "How Wang Shi Was Made." This time, it reveals the true inner world of Lang Xianping. Lang Xianping is sometimes called "Li Ao of the economics world," with a passion for struggle like Lu Xun. Some say he is a "killer of private enterprises," while others call him the "father of private enterprises." Some call him "academic rock," and others say he is a fame-hungry opportunist. Lang Xianping says: "I am lonely, but I am excited. I have always been full of hope for the future of China!" As history entered 2005, although property rights reform still needed to be further improved and advanced, we could no longer ignore the omissions in several rounds of reforms, nor the serious issues of development imbalance and unfairness. Addressing these problems has now risen to the level of the state's scientific development concept, harmonious society, and people-centered governance strategy. Similarly, what matters is not whether property rights reform should continue, but whether it should be carried out openly and fairly under the framework of laws and regulations. In the absence of a legal and institutional framework, radical property rights reform should be postponed. Interestingly, this debate has constructively gone beyond the limitations of specialized academic discussions in economics. In the debate, economists were not only speaking to their peers but also to the public and the government. Scholars seemed to realize, without consensus, that the purpose of speaking was not just to persuade opponents but also to influence and even shape the opinions of their target audience in society and the future public policies of the government. This is a rare debate concerning major public policies.
