Romain Rolland was deeply moved by Ostrovsky's heroic deeds and believed he "was a poem himself." In a letter to him, Rolland wrote, "Your name is to me the symbol of the highest and purest spirit of courage." He also personally wrote the preface for the French translation of The Steel Was Tempered.
In 1989, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China listed The Steel Was Tempered as the top choice among the ten essential books for young people as "life guides." In 1999, it also ranked first in the selection of the "50 Books That Moved the Republic."
