What could be the reason for not having a period but not being pregnant?

Patient's question:

I took an early pregnancy test myself and it also showed negative. Moreover, the C line was particularly distinct. However, my period still hasn't arrived. Additionally, I've been experiencing some bloating and cramping in my abdomen these past few days. What could be the cause of this? What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

Generally, if the pregnancy duration is short, early pregnancy test strips and ultrasound are not definitive methods for confirming early pregnancy. Moreover, this does not necessarily mean you are pregnant. A normal menstrual cycle is 28 days, with the first 7 days and the last 7 days both considered normal. In other words, a normal menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days. Additionally, menstruation can be influenced by many factors, leading to it being either early or delayed, such as diet, mood, environment, work or study stress, etc. If you want to determine whether you are pregnant now, the only reliable method is to have blood drawn for a human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test. This test can confirm whether you are pregnant.
