If one maintains this attitude, great achievements will not be attained, nor will one be sympathetic in times of adversity. By adhering to principles and adapting to changes, one is not burdened by external circumstances and can fulfill their path with integrity. — Ma Yifu, 1939
Renowned scholar Ma Yifu was appointed as the chief lecturer of Fuxing Academy in 1939, overseeing its academic affairs. The academy was located in Wuyou Temple on Wuyoushan in Leshan, Sichuan, a place of exceptional beauty. The name "Fuxing" signifies the restoration of the innate goodness of benevolence, righteousness, and moral integrity. Fuxing Academy aimed to elucidate classical studies, emphasize principles, and cultivate scholars who could grasp the essence of knowledge, achieve profound understanding, and develop strong, upright, and steadfast character.
The academy began lectures in September 1939 and concluded them in May 1941, spanning a total of one year and eight months. Afterward, it focused solely on publishing books. Fuxing Academy Lectures consists of six volumes, comprising all the lectures delivered by Ma Yifu to the academy's students. Volume one serves as an outline, advising scholars on the purpose, content, methods, and pathways of learning. Volumes two to six provide comprehensive, in-depth, and unique interpretations of multiple Confucian classics.
