Features: The teaching requirements for College English reading instruction stipulated in the "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses" (Trial) specify general and higher-level requirements. The general requirements are: being able to basically read English articles on general topics, with a reading speed of 70 words per minute. When reading longer, slightly less challenging materials quickly, the reading speed should reach 100 words per minute; being able to basically read English domestic newspapers and magazines, grasp the main idea, understand key facts and relevant details; being able to read common practical writing materials encountered in work and daily life; and being able to use effective reading methods while reading. The higher requirements are: being able to basically read articles on general topics from English-language popular newspapers and magazines in English-speaking countries, with a reading speed of 70 words per minute. When reading longer materials quickly, the reading speed should reach 120 words per minute; being able to skim or scan the reading materials; being able to read review literature in one's field of study and correctly understand the main idea, grasp key facts, and relevant details. According to these requirements, we have organized a group of experienced experts and professors to write this reading textbook. This reading textbook is also an important part of the New Thinking College English series. In the writing process, we have emphasized the following ideas: 1. Reflecting new reform trends. The new College English teaching reform highlights listening and speaking skills while also proposing requirements for fast English reading and practical English reading. We have intentionally arranged reading materials from newspapers and magazines and common practical writing in work and daily life. The selected articles cover topics such as humanities, history, geography, economics, science and technology, medicine, and psychology. The question types include multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, translation, and sentence completion. At the same time, the content of the articles is about phenomena and issues that students are currently concerned about and thinking about, rather than phenomena and issues that teachers believe they should know and understand, reflecting a focus on interest and practicality. 2. Adhering to the principle of gradual progression. Whether it is the difficulty of the article themes or the depth of the content, or the difficulty of the reading comprehension question types, this principle is fully realized.
