How long does it take to get pregnant after cohabitation?

Patient's question:

Doctor, my wife and I had sex around September 22 this month. This month, she didn't have her period. These past few days, she's been feeling nauseous and hasn't been eating. Today, she went for a thorough check-up and was told she's pregnant. The baby is 5 weeks old. What's going on?

Doctor's answer:

Did an ultrasound to confirm early pregnancy. Nausea and loss of appetite are normal early pregnancy symptoms. If you cannot have a bowel movement or experience frequent dry heaves, be cautious of hyperemesis gravidarum. The estimated gestational age starts from the first day of the last menstrual period. For example, if you have your period on the 1st, you are likely to ovulate around the 14th. If you have sexual intercourse before or after ovulation and discover that your period hasn't arrived by the 28th to 30th, and a urine test shows two lines, you can estimate that you are more than 4 weeks pregnant. By the 5th of the next month (the 35th day of your period), you will be 5 weeks pregnant. Generally, an ultrasound examination after the 35th day can reveal a gestational sac.
