How long does it take to get pregnant after cohabitation?

Patient's question:

Doctor, my wife and I had sex around September 22 this month. This month she didn't have her period, and she's been feeling nauseous and not eating lately. Today she went for a check-up and was told she's pregnant, with the baby at 5 weeks. What's going on?

Doctor's answer:

Performed ultrasound to confirm early pregnancy. Nausea and loss of appetite are normal early pregnancy symptoms. If unable to have a bowel movement or experiencing frequent dry heaves, be cautious of hyperemesis gravidarum. The gestational age is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period. For example, if your period starts on the 1st, you are expected to ovulate around the 14th. If you have sexual intercourse before or after ovulation and discover that your period hasn't arrived by the 28th to 30th, a positive urine test with two lines indicates a gestational age of more than 4 weeks. By the 5th of the next month (day 35 of the menstrual cycle), the gestational age would be 5 weeks. Generally, an ultrasound examination after day 35 can reveal the gestational sac.
