Portraiture, one of the three major painting genres of Chinese painting, refers to paintings that primarily depict human figures, abbreviated as "figure painting." It emerged earlier than landscape painting and flower-and-bird painting. When appreciating such works, one should primarily consider the environment and atmosphere depicted, observing whether the figures are portrayed vividly and realistically, embodying both form and spirit—i.e., whether they achieve "spirit resonance." For example, the court ladies in Gu Kaizhi's The Admonitions of the Palace Ladies exhibit a dignified and composed demeanor; the expressive and vividly rendered figures in Yan Liben's The Locking of the Censors are rich in emotion; and the playful yet enigmatic spirit of the immortal in Liang Kaitai's Ink Wash Immortal is portrayed with lifelike charm.
