Landscape painting is one of the three major painting genres in China, referring to paintings that primarily depict natural scenery of mountains and rivers, often shortened to "landscape painting." It originated in the Jin Dynasty, with blue-and-green landscapes as the main style, and became an independent genre starting from the Sui and Tang dynasties. Wu Daozi pioneered ink and wash landscape painting, and by the Five Dynasties and early Song Dynasty, the Northern and Southern Schools emerged, emphasizing harmonious composition, ethereal and profound artistic conception. By the Northern Song Dynasty, literati often used landscape painting to express their emotions and seek aesthetic pleasure, resulting in numerous masterpieces. For example, Zhan Ziqian's "Spring Outing" features delicate and fluid brushwork with a timeless color palette; Fan Kuan's "Travelers among Mountains and Streams" showcases towering cliffs with dense and heavy brushstrokes; Shen Zhou's "High Mount Lu" displays variations in ink density and a well-organized arrangement of sparse and dense brushwork.
