This book is divided into four parts to introduce this process: (1) Introduction: Briefly describes the formation of modern Chinese linguistics at the beginning of the 20th century and its development in subsequent historical periods; (2) Introduces the development and achievements of major disciplines in linguistics in the 20th century, covering eight topics: Chinese grammar research, the historical development and synchronic description of phonetics, language survey and description, Chinese lexical meaning research, studies on writing systems, Chinese rhetoric research, the history of linguistics, and applied linguistics; (3) Reviews and analyzes major debates in the field of linguistics in the 20th century, such as language and speech, the phylogenetic classification of East Asian languages, the division of Chinese dialects, the characteristics of modern Chinese grammar and the localism of Chinese grammar research, the classification of Chinese parts of speech, Chinese syntactic analysis, whether rhetoric belongs to speech linguistics, the nature of "Qieyun" and its phonological basis, the nature of Chinese characters, and reforms of writing systems; (4) Summarizes the language research institutions, academic associations, academic journals, and major reference books that emerged in the 20th century. At the end of the book, there is a chronology of major events in the development of linguistics in the 20th century.
