Features: In recent years, the new trends of technological development and talent competition have driven the rapid growth of graduate education in China. The enrollment of graduate students has been increasing in scale year by year, but the contradiction that graduate foreign language teaching lags behind practical needs has become increasingly prominent. On one hand, graduate English teaching needs to break through traditional models, moving beyond the English learning content and patterns that students have been accustomed to since middle school (or even elementary school) up to undergraduate university. In other words, graduate English teaching calls for diversification and differentiation to meet the varying needs of students at different levels and with different proficiency levels. On the other hand, many teachers are struggling to find a well-designed textbook that meets the requirements of graduate English teaching in the new era. In light of this, China Renmin University Press, after in-depth research and with the strong support of participating institutions, has specially compiled and published this "Graduate English Elective Course Series" to meet the urgent needs of teachers and students. The series includes "Teaching Guide for Reading Articles from Media," "New Selected Readings from Media," "Teaching Guide for Public Speaking in Public English," and "Teaching Guide for Cross-Cultural Communication." The target audience includes non-English major graduate students, postgraduate students, as well as English learners and enthusiasts with a comparable level of English proficiency. This textbook is designed with ten units, guiding students to systematically learn the main components of public speaking, such as planning, opening and closing, and handling questions. Each unit is self-contained, focusing on a specific aspect of public speaking. The first five chapters outline the basic skills required for a successful speech, while the last five chapters explore issues related to language, style, and presentation strategies from both theoretical and practical perspectives. In the answer section, we provide standard or reference answers. For sections without questions or for open-ended questions, answers are omitted. The book is also accompanied by a standard audio cassette for easy use. The materials selected are classic and renowned, easily accessible; the wisdom and insights are abundant. The book is highly readable, blending knowledge and entertainment. It is also highly practical, as we firmly believe that "practice makes perfect." Therefore, it includes as many practical activities as possible, encouraging students to design and deliver speeches. The "DV Recording Practice" in each unit is one of the highlights of this textbook. In this section, teachers can record students' speeches and then replay them, encouraging students to comment on the speech and fill out the corresponding evaluation forms to develop their speaking potential. In addition, this book is suitable for learners at various levels: it can be used in classroom teaching or for self-study, making it the preferred choice for undergraduates, graduate students, and English enthusiasts as a public speaking textbook or reference book.
