Features: In the fight against infectious diseases, viral diseases hold a special and important position because many viral diseases currently lack effective preventive vaccines, and viral therapy has not yet seen significant breakthroughs in principle. Among viral infectious diseases, respiratory viruses are particularly prominent, as they can cause large-scale epidemics in populations within a short period, posing severe consequences to public health, national security, and economic development. The purpose of this book is to comprehensively and systematically introduce the latest research achievements in the etiology and prevention of respiratory viruses. The book is divided into twelve chapters: The necessity and importance of preventing and controlling acute respiratory viral infections, An overview of the etiology and basic characteristics of acute respiratory viral infections, Orthomyxoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Coronaviridae, Adenoviridae, Picornaviridae, Respiroviridae, Herpesviridae, An overview of the prevention and control of acute respiratory infections, Non-specific broad-spectrum antiviral peptides – interferon and biological defense and pathogen monitoring systems.
The content of this book reflects the author's own research in virology since 1955, the research achievements of the author's laboratory—the State Key Laboratory of Virology Engineering for Prevention and Control of Viral Diseases at the Institute for Viral Disease Prevention and Control—and a substantial introduction to recent international research progress in this field. In terms of writing style, the book adopts a family-by-family approach to provide a comprehensive introduction to viruses. For example, regarding the SARS coronavirus, which belongs to the Coronaviridae family, we not only discuss the SARS virus but also introduce the characteristics of the entire family, to help readers gain a comprehensive understanding of the SARS virus. The same applies to avian influenza viruses.
This book can serve as a reference for prevention personnel working in provincial and municipal disease control centers across the country, as well as graduate students in related disciplines of preventive medicine. It is also valuable for medical staff at infectious disease hospitals and prevention centers at all levels, as well as scientific and technological personnel engaged in virology and life science research.
