An epic masterpiece that deeply tells the stories of war and wealth, love and hate, greed and redemption.
A personal history of struggling against fate, striking the deepest darkness and passion in the human soul.
Tom was also called "The Son of Adam" at birth, but he was the son of a servant in the family of Sir Adam Montagu. The knight treated Tom as his own son, except when it came to inheritance and oil drilling. The son of the knight, Allen, who was born on the same day as Tom, always regarded Tom as his brother even closer than his own. Toys, utensils, servants, secrets, wealth, and battlefield dreams were all shared between them until one day, he discovered in his wife's room that there were two people in bed: Lissette, and Tom, lying beside her, naked and leisurely.
The two brothers turned against each other. Tom tried to convince Allen that he "hadn't done anything," while Allen imagined that Tom must have "done the deed" with his wife. Was the brotherhood that transcended blood and life destroyed?
Thirteen days later, August 23, 1916, also the twenty-third birthday of Allen and Tom, in the no-man's-land of the Somme battlefield in France, just thirty yards from the German border, Allen crawled, bullets whizzing past his ears, yet he ignored them. He held his breath, then shouted, "Tom! Tom!" But there was no echo.
This is an epic masterpiece that tells the stories of war and wealth, love and hate, greed and redemption. War destroys everything but cannot destroy human nature; hatred is vast but will not extinguish the love between men and women, or the brotherhood between brothers. From to, from Persia to Texas, from Westminster to Washington, battlefields and oil drills, business wars and love affairs—what moved millions of British readers besides the tangled dreams of wealth, the endless pursuit of material desires, and finally finding their own loved ones, is the brotherhood between two men that transcends life and death.
American readers say The Son of Adam is the British version of A Long Way Down. What do you think? Do you, like foreign readers, feel the impact of the deepest darkness and passion in the human soul, and marvel that love will ultimately triumph over hate, and greed will ultimately be redeemed?
