Features: In recent years, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have played an extremely important role in socio-economic development due to their large number and wide distribution. The international economic community and academia generally agree that SMEs are the protagonists of economic development in the 21st century. Since the 1990s, with the deepening of international economic integration and the new economic revolution, developed countries have actively supported the development and research of SMEs. As a global largest developing country, the status and role of SMEs in China are even more prominent. Therefore, to gather the strengths of various fields and conduct research and discussion on SMEs is actually of profound significance. Since the th International SME Conference was successfully held in October 1991, the preparation for the annual West Lake International SME Conference has always received attention and support from the SME community, academia, and governments at all levels both domestically and internationally. By November 2004, six sessions of the West Lake International SME Conference had been successfully held. Participants at the 6th West Lake International SME Conference included SME scholars, government officials, and entrepreneurs from more than ten countries and regions around the world. They provided many insightful papers, and the attendees discussed these articles, exploring hot issues in SME development from various perspectives. It is believed that this will produce beneficial insights. This paper collection includes a portion of these works to be enjoyed by a broad readership.
