Features: The "Symposium on Modern Chinese Function Words and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages" was jointly organized by the School of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages at Shanghai Normal University and the Office of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages under the State Language Commission. The symposium was held from November 15 to 16, 2003, at Shanghai Normal University. This was the first academic conference in China centered on Chinese function words, and it was a grand gathering where scholars of Chinese function words and educators in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages exchanged ideas and shared their research and teaching experiences on this common topic. The papers included in this collection were all presented at the symposium, and most of them were revised by the authors in detail or in part based on the suggestions of the participants.
