Features: This book was written according to the requirements of the Ministry of Education's 1999 professional setup reform, following the implementation of new professional settings. Before publication, all content was in the form of lecture notes and was repeatedly tested in undergraduate teaching at Tsinghua University. The book consists of 7 chapters, which start from the fundamental principles of physics, chemistry, mechanics, metallurgy, and materials science to explain the composition of materials during material processing, combined with the variation patterns of mechanical properties. It explores the methods and approaches to improve material structure and performance during processing, and introduces the changes in microstructural transformation, temperature field, stress field, and defect formation and control during material processing. Each chapter also includes a reference list and review questions. This book is one of the series textbooks on material processing at Tsinghua University, along with two companion textbooks, "Material Processing Technology" and "Material Processing Series Experiments," which can be used for reference alongside this book. It can serve as a textbook or reference for students majoring in material forming and control engineering, material processing and manufacturing, and related fields in higher education institutions. It can also be used by engineering technicians for learning and reference. The book discusses the changes in material structure, performance, and shape under external processing conditions during processes such as liquid-phase processing, solidification processing, semi-solid processing, solid-state deformation processing, and joining processing. The content covers fundamental theories and specialized knowledge in physical metallurgy, chemical metallurgy, mechanical metallurgy, as well as heat transfer, momentum transfer, and mass transfer. During material processing, multiple physicochemical phenomena often occur, involving the transfer and transformation of matter and energy. The content of this book aims to explain the essence of these phenomena, reveal the patterns of change, and enable learners to grasp the essence of material processing. It lays a theoretical foundation for understanding and solving newly discovered problems in material processing and developing new processing technologies. This book is written as a textbook for senior undergraduate students majoring in material processing engineering (or material forming and control engineering) and is part of the series textbooks "Material Processing Principles," "Material Processing Technology," and "Material Processing Series Experiments." In addition to serving as a textbook, it can also be used as a reference for engineering technicians engaged in metallurgy, casting, forging, welding, and related fields.
