By pooling contributions, they have compiled them into a single volume, preserving the rich and timeless essence of ancient poetry for readers. Throughout history, there have been countless collections of classical Chinese poetry, vast and numerous. Yet, the most representative ones are undoubtedly The Book of Songs, edited by Confucius; A Thousand Poems, selected by Xie Fangde and Wang Xiang; Sources of Ancient Poetry, selected by Shen Deqian; Three Hundred Poems of Tang Poetry, compiled by Sun Zhu of Hongtang; and Selected Lyrics, compiled by Zhang Huizhan. These five works encompass the essence of poetry and lyrics from the pre-Qin period to the Song Dynasty, ranking as classic works of ancient Chinese poetry. Additionally, the commentaries on The Book of Songs by Zhu Xi, A Thousand Poems by Wang Xiang, Sources of Ancient Poetry by Shen Defa, Selected Lyrics by Zhang Huizhan, and Three Hundred Poems of Tang Poetry by Chen Wanjun provide insightful annotations and critiques. These annotations, concise yet profound, elucidate the poetic meaning and establish unique scholarly perspectives, harmonizing perfectly with the original works and shining with brilliance. They have long been esteemed by scholars. For centuries, these works have been passed down through families and widely studied, enduring through time. To meet the needs of readers seeking to learn and recite classical poetry and lyrics, our press has specially invited scholars and experts to organize these five works. Considering that Selected Lyrics was overly selective, we have also included A Continuation of Selected Lyrics by Dong Yi of the Qing Dynasty. By pooling contributions, we have compiled them into a single volume, preserving the rich and timeless essence of ancient poetry for readers.
