Features: Bronze inscriptions are the most important documents of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. As physical textual materials, they supplement the lack of transmitted literature from this period, making them indispensable research materials for ancient history, paleography, ancient Chinese language, archaeology, and many other disciplines. In terms of the entire documentary system, published bronze inscriptions to date have generally focused on the compilation, recording, and publication of research achievements in and interpretation. As a systematic modern translation book of Shang and Zhou bronze inscriptions, this book strives to present a form that is easy for general readers in to read and accept, and convenient for reference. It comprehensively and objectively introduces and disseminates the research achievements of academia in bronze inscriptions, with the aim of better utilizing this valuable cultural heritage in various professional fields.
To achieve this goal, the book collects nearly 1,000 representative inscriptions from various Shang and Zhou bronze artifacts that have been deeply researched and have clear and complete (including basically clear and complete) text. It is divided into two volumes: "Shang Dynasty and Western Zhou Dynasty" and "Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period." To provide as much relevant information as possible, each inscription is accompanied by attributes of the artifact (era, country, source of recording, etc.), thematic keywords of the inscription content, bronze, interpretation with punctuation, brief annotations on the interpretation, etc. References are also provided after the modern translation to ensure the reliability of the data and facilitate verification. The book also includes various indexes such as content classification search.
In the arrangement of this book, the setting of "content thematic keywords" is a new attempt. The so-called "content thematic keywords" refer to the classification and summary of the content of each "modern translation" according to the category of the inscription content. Due to the varying richness of the content of each inscription, there is no limit to the number of "content thematic keywords" for each inscription. The "content thematic keywords" serve as the basis for the content classification search of the modern translation of the entire book. Since they usually have a one-to-many relationship with the modern translation of each inscription, the "content classification search" can reflect a certain degree of multi-functional hypertext nature to some extent, creating more convenience for readers.
