Features: College English for Experience is a national-level planning textbook for higher education under the "Five-Year Plan," featuring innovative and practical content. It was jointly written by scholars from several renowned universities in China, following the requirements of the Teaching Syllabus for College English (Revised Edition) and incorporating new teaching concepts. Based on the needs of teaching and learning, experienced teachers from universities such as Shanghai International Studies University have collaborated to create this College English for Experience Textbook Companion. This book is a new masterpiece from Huayuan Foreign Language, completely faithful to the textbook, with comprehensive content and detailed explanations, dedicated to helping students improve their English proficiency and master various learning skills. The structure and features of each unit in this companion guide are as follows:
1. Culture Link
This section introduces the main concepts, terminology, writing background, and relevant figures of the two texts in the unit, helping readers enrich their knowledge while deeply understanding the texts. It also makes reading more engaging and enjoyable.
2. Text Comprehension
This is the core of the companion guide, divided into three parts:
a. Listen and Talk
"Listening and Speaking" focuses on the development of practical and communicative skills, greatly benefiting readers in improving their listening and speaking abilities.
b. Read and Explore
This section is particularly important and includes the following aspects:
1) Text Summary (Chinese-English): Provides a general overview of the text, helping readers grasp the content at a glance.
2) Text Structure Analysis (Chinese-English): Clarifies the overall structure of the text, making it easy for readers to understand.
3) Writing Features
Introduces the genre, writing style, and thought process of each text, not only deepening readers' understanding of the author's ideas but also teaching them how to write clear, coherent, and thought-provoking articles.
4) Syllabus Vocabulary and Phrases
Details such as part of speech, meaning, synonyms, antonyms, example sentences, word formation, derivatives, easily confused words (homophones), and key points (collocations, distinctions, notes) help students solidly master and flexibly apply the core vocabulary and phrases in the text. Since College English for Experience is intended for non-English majors, the vocabulary in this guide is selected according to the Vocabulary List for College English Teaching Syllabus, compiled by the Ministry of Education and the Advisory Committee on College Foreign Language Teaching, published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press and Higher Education Press.
5) Sentence Analysis
Translates and explains complex or specially meaningful sentences in the text (original sentences marked with Line X, Para. X), clarifying key vocabulary and phrases to help students fully and correctly understand the essence of the text.
6) Reference Translations
Translations adhere to the principles of "faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance," with fluent and distinctive wording.
7) Exercise Answers and Explanations
Provides answers to each question, along with translations. Detailed explanations are given for some questions, and solving techniques are also explained.
c. Write and Produce
Various writing exercises help improve readers' writing skills.
3. Mock Test
This section is a key feature of the book, designed to allow readers to test their actual proficiency while learning, identify gaps, see progress, and gain more motivation to study. The mock tests are selected from past College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) exams.
4. Mock Test Answers and Explanations
Correct answers are provided, along with detailed explanations. Each question is summarized to highlight key points, and the patterns of question-setting are analyzed.
Additional features of this companion guide include:
1. Listening and Speaking Guide
Given that many schools have limited listening class time, students may still have questions after listening to the recordings. This guide includes answers and transcripts of the listening and speaking exercises for post-class review and reference.
2. Red Film Self-Test
In the section on syllabus vocabulary and phrases, each example sentence and key term in the key points is printed in red. By using the attached red film to cover these keywords and answers, readers can conveniently test their learning progress.
Although all the compilers are experienced teachers working on the front lines of education, this book may still have imperfections. We sincerely welcome readers to point out any mistakes.
"When the wind blows, the boat will break through the waves; when the sails are hoisted, we will cross the vast ocean." We sincerely hope this book can become a trusted teacher and friend for all students and, like other Huayuan books, be loved by everyone.
