The teaching philosophy followed by this book—Task-based learning
《University Competency English》 is based on the "task-based learning" concept, treating students as individuals who use language to complete tasks rather than mere learners. In this series, students engage in learning by assuming specific roles. Each unit focuses on a particular topic, training students' language communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation.
1. The TASK of each unit serves as the overall guide for the course, reflecting the essence of the lesson. For example, in 《Walking into Social II》, there is a unit titled "Tsunami." We assume Mr. Li is a Chinese doctor with an international rescue team supporting the tsunami disaster in Indonesia. In this rescue mission, Mr. Li is required to complete tasks such as rescue operations, communication with local disaster victims and other medical workers, reporting on the scene, and acting as an interpreter. Under this overarching task, Mr. Li proceeds step by step to accomplish these objectives:
2. Listening content for the "Tsunami" unit: A radio news report about the Indian Ocean tsunami.
3. Speaking content for the "Tsunami" unit:
- Situational Dialogue 1: Explaining the current condition of a patient's injuries and the treatment plan to them.
- Situational Dialogue 2: Discussing animals' sixth sense with an American doctor from the rescue team.
4. Reading content for the "Tsunami" unit: Reading an article about the tsunami and answering related questions.
5. Writing content for the "Tsunami" unit: Writing a work report for the rescue team leader.
6. Translation content for the "Tsunami" unit: A local official delivers a report on the recent situation of the tsunami, and Mr. Li provides simultaneous interpretation.
In line with the spirit of the Ministry of Education's 2004 "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial)," this series of elective college competency English textbooks was co-developed by several key universities across the country to ensure a continuous four-year college English learning experience for students.
《University Competency English》 is based on the "task-based learning" concept, emphasizing pragmatic behavior principles. Each unit focuses on a specific topic, training students' language communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Each book is accompanied by an audio CD.
《University Competency English—Walking into Social II》 covers engaging and interesting research topics such as online life, biotechnology, scientific mysteries, human-nature relationships, and technological trends, with a total of 15 scenarios. This book is suitable as a textbook for advanced non-English majors in undergraduate programs and can also be used for self-study.
