Features: How to Help All Students Actively Participate in Mathematical Activities
Many teachers find that during the organization of mathematical activities, not all students participate. Some students either observe or engage in other activities. Over time, these students may fall behind the rest of the class, becoming the underachievers in the class. How can we address this situation?
First, we need to carefully observe and analyze the process of mathematical activities. Observe each student's performance and check if there are any students in the group who exhibit a "dominance" behavior, such as only speaking for themselves, not giving others a chance to speak, or rushing to place learning materials in front of themselves when only one set is available for the group, making it difficult for others to participate. If such behavior exists, it should be guided and positively addressed. Praise those who treat others equally and cooperate, creating a fair and harmonious atmosphere in group learning to provide opportunities for every student to participate in mathematical activities.
Next, analyze the situation of the observing students. Some students are introverted and reluctant to share their ideas unless they are completely sure of them. For these students, giving them opportunities and appropriate encouragement can motivate them to actively engage in the activities and become key contributors. Other students may struggle academically and suffer from low self-esteem, believing that group activities are irrelevant to them and that they are outsiders. These students require special attention. Assign them simple and achievable tasks to help them participate in the activities. Allow them to answer basic questions during discussions, enabling them to experience the joy of success and build confidence in learning.
Encourage them to listen attentively to others' remarks, describe whether they agree with the statements, identify any parts they don't understand, and ask questions. This is also a form of active participation in mathematical activities. Additionally, ask them to provide supplementary opinions on others' ideas. Only by involving these students in mathematical activities can their performance improve and their overall development be fostered.
