Features: This textbook is titled "Newly Compiled Pǔtōnghuà Training Course." Its features are as follows in three aspects:
1. Targeted
The primary users of this textbook are students from Shanxi normal universities and teachers from primary and secondary schools as well as kindergartens in Shanxi Province. Therefore, the writing of the textbook is closely linked to the actual dialects of Shanxi. Shanxi has two major dialect areas: the Jin dialect area and the Central Plains Mandarin area. The textbook addresses the difficulties and common errors in learning Pǔtōnghuà for these two dialect areas through tone correction and comparative exercises, enabling students to grasp the corresponding patterns and consciously correct their accents.
2. Practical
The fundamental principle of learning Pǔtōnghuà is to practice extensively. Whether it is tones, initials, finals, or features like erhua (tone sandhi), the more you practice, the more naturally you will remember them. This textbook includes a large number of exercises in each chapter, such as pronunciation of syllables, recognition of syllables, word selection, discrimination and comparison, spelling, and reading aloud. The examples of characters, words, and sentences used in the textbook are mostly tailored to the dialects of Shanxi. Through extensive assignments and exercises, students are encouraged to express their thoughts fluently in Pǔtōnghuà.
3. Engaging
To enhance students' interest in learning Pǔtōnghuà, the textbook includes a variety of vivid materials tailored to the content of each chapter. These include classical poems, modern poems, crosstalk, jokes, riddles, tongue twisters, and dialect stories. By reading these engaging materials, learners can not only strengthen their interest in learning Pǔtōnghuà but also understand the specific applications of erhua, light tones, and tone sandhi in sentences. To support the development of the Pǔtōnghuà proficiency test, the textbook not only dedicates a special chapter with mock test questions but also selects corresponding exercises throughout the book for candidates to study.
