Features: Basic Malay is a intensive reading textbook designed for Chinese university students. Malay is a non-universal language, and undergraduate students typically start from zero, so this textbook is also suitable for self-learners who are passionate about studying Malay. Malay has been the lingua franca of the Malay Archipelago since ancient times. With the independence of the countries within the Malay-speaking region, Malay has evolved into Indonesian, Malaysian, and Bruneian Malay. However, considering that the constitutions of Malaysia and Brunei still explicitly declare Malay as the national language, this book is titled Basic Malay, with the target countries being Malaysia and Brunei. To ensure learners acquire authentic Malay, most of the materials selected for this book come from authoritative textbooks published by the language authorities of Malaysia and Brunei. Additionally, given that the target audience is adult Chinese learners, we have made appropriate modifications to the selected materials. This textbook reflects the editors' three main intentions: (1) systematically reflect the major linguistic phenomena and grammatical points encountered in the foundational stage of Malay learning; (2) adhere to the principles of language learning, demonstrating a scientific progression from simple to complex; (3) emphasize the cultural elements embedded in the language. When selecting materials, we have strived to choose those that embody representative and typical cultural background knowledge, facilitating the teaching of sociocultural knowledge related to the target countries alongside language instruction.
