Features: The Illustrated Handbook of Chinese Art History: Sculpture Volume is one of the essential guides for studying Chinese art. It is part of the Major Teaching Materials for Chinese Art Education Series: Art Volume, a key textbook series for higher art institutions, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and published by our press. It is designed to complement the Chinese Art History textbook and the History of Chinese Sculpture textbook also published by our press, helping readers understand the great tradition of Chinese sculpture art. The Chinese Art History textbook has won the Second Prize of the National Outstanding College Textbook Award from the Ministry of Education in 2002, while the History of Chinese Sculpture has received the Second Prize of the Outstanding Teaching Material Award from the Higher Art Institutions under the Ministry of Culture. As the author of the History of Chinese Sculpture textbook, Dr. Sun Zhenhua has compiled this illustrated handbook based on years of teaching and research experience in the history of Chinese sculpture, serving as a reference for art educators and students. The handbook includes 1,200 images of sculptures, nearly encompassing all significant works in ancient Chinese sculpture history from the Neolithic period to the late Qing Dynasty, making it a comprehensive visual history of Chinese sculpture. Its introduction, brief introductions to each historical period, information on specific works, and the appended references on major illustrated materials of Chinese sculpture provide readers with a relatively complete database of information. Through this illustrated handbook, readers can appreciate the different categories, functions, and stylistic transformations of Chinese sculpture across various eras, thereby grasping the intrinsic relationship between Chinese sculpture and the development of Chinese culture. The accompanying CD-ROM converts the black-and-white images in the book into color images and introduces simple methods for creating teaching presentations, facilitating teaching and appreciation.
Dr. Sun Zhenhua, the editor of this book, graduated from the Chinese Language Department of Central China Normal University and served as a teaching assistant in the Theory of Literature and Art Department. Later, he pursued a master's degree in Aesthetics under Professor Peng Lixun and earned a Ph.D. in the History of Chinese Sculpture from the China Academy of Art under Professor Shi Yan. After graduation, he joined the faculty as a lecturer and associate professor. Currently, he serves as the Director of the Shenzhen Sculpture Institute and is a National First-Class Fine Artist. His major works include Life, Deities, and Time-Space: On Sculpture Culture, Art and Aesthetic Education, History of Chinese Sculpture, Towards the Wilderness: Sun Zhenhua’s Sculpture Collection, and Sculpture Space, among others.
