Features: This textbook provides systematic and diverse extracurricular reading materials for non-English majors, aiming to cultivate students' proficiency in reading skills, accurate comprehension of passages, broaden their knowledge and cultural horizons, and enhance their reading comprehension and appreciation. The College English series is a novel, multi-dimensional supplementary textbook composed of books, audio-visual materials, CDs, and online resources. Since its release in 2001, it has been widely welcomed and praised by schools in use. Due to its full compliance with the basic requirements for college foreign language teaching proposed by the Ministry of Education, it has been selected as the "National-Level Planning Textbook for General Higher Education (15th Five-Year Plan)" and the "Ministry of Education Recommended College Foreign Language Textbook." The series includes one volume each of Comprehensive Course, Listening and Speaking Course, Reading Course, Fast Reading, from 1 to 6, and one Grammar Handbook.
Given China's vast territory, the teaching resources, faculty, and student needs vary across regions and institutions. Therefore, it is necessary to implement classified guidance and tiered teaching. To maximize the College English series' ability to meet the diverse needs of students at different levels, with varying proficiency and learning objectives, we specifically organized, planned, and compiled a preparatory level for the series. It includes one volume each of Comprehensive Course and Listening and Speaking Course, written by British experts familiar with college English teaching in China. This textbook is strictly developed according to the actual needs of college English teaching in China, with a difficulty level lower than that of College English Level 1 while maintaining a logical connection with it. Each unit in this textbook is organized thematically, enabling students to comprehensively and deeply master rich linguistic knowledge, acquire cultural information, and develop their comprehensive application skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. The after-class exercises are designed to be diverse, targeted, engaging, and challenging. In terms of material selection, emphasis is placed on the comparison of Eastern and Western cultures to cultivate students' cultural literacy and awaken their awareness of their local and cross-cultural identities.
