Features: To support the implementation of the "College English Teaching Syllabus"; to meet the higher requirements of society for college English teaching; Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press launched the "College English" series textbooks at the beginning of the new century, contributing to the advancement of college English teaching in China. A crystallization of collective wisdom: The entire series of textbooks was co-authored by senior professors and English teaching experts from renowned institutions such as Fudan University, Peking University, East China Normal University, University of Science and Technology of China, South China University of Technology, Nanjing University, Wuhan University, Nankai University, Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Southeast University, and Soochow University. A comprehensive and well-structured course combination: The series consists of four types of textbooks—Comprehensive, Listening and Speaking, Reading, and Fast Reading—as well as a Grammar Handbook. In addition, preparatory-level textbooks for the first four are available for students with lower starting levels. Each textbook corresponds to one another, forming an organic whole. Balancing language proficiency and comprehensive application skills: The series centers on the "Comprehensive Textbook." Each unit revolves around a theme reflecting contemporary life, supplemented by the "Listening and Speaking Textbook," "Reading Textbook," and "Fast Reading Textbook." This guides students to deeply and comprehensively acquire and master language and cultural knowledge related to each theme, along with rich language materials, while fully practicing their language application skills on the realistic topic. A dual-winning strategy of quality cultivation and successful exam preparation: Each textbook includes a certain number of exercises similar to CET exam formats. The "Test Yourself" section in the "Comprehensive Textbook" is designed in the form of a CET exam paper, allowing students to familiarize themselves with the format and requirements of the CET while learning language knowledge and training language application skills, achieving the goal of balancing quality cultivation and exam preparation. This textbook provides non-English majors with systematic and diverse extracurricular reading materials, aiming to cultivate students' proficiency in using reading skills, accurately understanding passages, expanding their knowledge and cultural horizons, and enhancing their reading comprehension and appreciation. The "College English" series textbooks are a novel, multi-dimensional supplementary materials composed of books, audio-visual materials, CDs, and online resources. Since their release in 2001, they have been widely welcomed and praised by schools in use. Due to their comprehensive alignment with the basic requirements of college foreign language teaching proposed by the Ministry of Education, the series has been selected as the "National Planning Textbook for General Higher Education 'Five-Year Plan'" and the "Ministry of Education Recommended College Foreign Language Teaching Materials." The series includes one volume each of "Comprehensive Textbook," "Listening and Speaking Textbook," "Reading Textbook," "Fast Reading Textbook" (from 1 to 6), and one "Grammar Handbook." Given China's vast territory, teaching resources, faculty teams, and student conditions vary across regions and institutions. Therefore, it is necessary to implement classified guidance and tiered teaching. To maximize the "College English" series textbooks' ability to meet the needs of students of different levels, proficiency, and learning objectives, we have specifically organized and compiled the preparatory-level series. It includes one volume each of the "Comprehensive Textbook" and "Listening and Speaking Textbook," written by British experts familiar with college English teaching in China. This textbook is strictly compiled according to the actual needs of college English teaching in China, with a difficulty level lower than the first level of "College English" but seamlessly with it. Each unit in this textbook is organized thematically, enabling students to comprehensively and deeply master rich language knowledge, acquire cultural information, and develop their listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills. The after-class exercises are designed to be diverse, targeted, engaging, and challenging. In terms of content selection, emphasis is placed on the comparison of Eastern and Western cultures to cultivate students' cultural literacy and awaken their local and cross-cultural awareness.
