To the implementation of the "College English Teaching Syllabus" (Revised Edition) and to adapt to the new requirements of college English teaching in society, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press proudly launches the "College English" series of integrated teaching materials—comprising textbooks, audio cassettes, multimedia CDs, online systems, and question banks, all fully equipped.
A crystallization of collective wisdom: The entire series is co-authored by experienced professors and English teaching experts from renowned institutions such as Fudan University, Peking University, East China Normal University, University of Science and Technology of China, South China University of Technology, Nanjing University, Wuhan University, Nankai University, Renmin University of China, and Sun Yat-sen University, as well as publishing organizations.
A comprehensive and well-structured curriculum: The series consists of four types of textbooks—Comprehensive, Listening and Speaking, Reading, and Fast Reading—as well as a grammar manual. Additionally, a preparatory-level textbook is available for students with lower starting levels. Each textbook corresponds to one another, forming an organic whole.
Balancing language proficiency and comprehensive application skills: Centered around the "Comprehensive Textbook," each unit explores a theme reflecting contemporary life, supplemented by the "Listening and Speaking Textbook," "Reading Textbook," and "Fast Reading Textbook." These materials guide students in thoroughly acquiring and mastering language and cultural knowledge related to each theme, along with abundant language materials, while also providing in-depth training in comprehensive language application skills for the practical theme.
A winning strategy for cultivating qualities and achieving exam success: Each textbook includes exercises similar to those found in the CET exams, and the "Comprehensive Textbook" features a "Test Yourself" section designed in the CET exam format. This allows students to familiarize themselves with the form and requirements of the CET while learning language knowledge and practicing language application skills, achieving the dual goal of quality cultivation and exam preparation.
The purpose of this textbook is to facilitate teachers' preparation and teaching. This teacher's manual provides the following three aspects of content for each text:
1. Text-related information: Primarily involving the author's life, names of people and places mentioned in the text, historical events, and cultural backgrounds. This manual offers detailed introductions to these aspects, enabling teachers to focus more energy and time on helping students improve their reading skills, which is the primary objective. Teachers may select or omit content based on actual teaching situations.
2. Explanations of language difficulties: This section mainly explains key vocabulary, phrases, and grammatical structures, along with example sentences. The explanations are concise, clear, and highlight key points.
3. Exercise answers: The answers in this section are primarily based on the exercises at the end of each unit in the "Reading Textbook" (General Edition) of the fifth volume of the student's book. No additional explanations are provided. Except for multiple-choice questions, the answers provided in this manual are not necessarily the only correct answers and are intended for reference only.
