Features: This textbook is designed for the teaching of clinical surgery in long-term academic programs. Since 1998, when our university (formerly Beijing Medical University) introduced a 7-year clinical medicine program, it has continuously enrolled students for fourteen consecutive sessions. Teachers involved in the teaching over the years, through curriculum reform and teaching practice, deeply felt the urgency and necessity of compiling a new textbook for long-term academic teaching to consolidate the achievements of educational reform, further improve teaching quality, and enhance inter-university exchanges. To this end, senior and mid-to-young teachers from the affiliated hospitals of our university and clinical teaching hospitals, based on the requirements of the Ministry of Education for the cultivation of talents in long-term academic programs, and referring to classic textbooks abroad and other surgical specialty books, combined with the accumulated experience of teachers in teaching practice over more than ten years and the results of clinical educational reform, compiled this textbook. In the writing process, in addition to emphasizing the strengthening of basic theoretical knowledge and highlighting the principles of broad scope and wide adaptability, the integration of theory and practice was also strengthened. This textbook has the following features:
1. Bilingual writing attempt, strengthening foreign language learning
Taking our university's "Human Physiology" as a sample, this textbook attempts to strengthen the teaching of English keywords, enabling students to expand their professional English vocabulary through learning professional content, which is beneficial to improving their ability to read English literature.
2. Breaking through the traditional textbook model, advocating content updates, and broadening thinking
In addition to introducing the concepts, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment principles of diseases as covered in general textbooks, this textbook also selectively introduces some highly promising new concepts, theories, or new therapies and technologies that may be widely used in a short period, as well as some new concepts or regulations that are still being discussed domestically but already in use internationally. This aims to inspire students' innovative thinking, prepare them for work in new environments after graduation, and cultivate their sensitivity to new things and interest in exploring and researching new issues. Additionally, the textbook includes some content intended only for group discussions and personal self-study, which helps students in their later research topic selection.
3. The textbook is accompanied by a CD-ROM with foreign teachers reading and explaining key terms and annotations for each chapter, assisting students in self-studying professional foreign language and improving their listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills in professional foreign language.
Since this textbook is a first-time compilation, with a large number of authors, differences in understanding and interpretation of the writing requirements may exist, leading to variations in the depth, breadth, and range of English vocabulary selection across chapters. Moreover, due to the haste in publication and the limited experience and expertise of the authors, shortcomings and errors are inevitable and require continuous improvement and refinement in practice. We sincerely invite peers from all walks of life to provide criticism and corrections.
