Chinese painting is a traditional form of Chinese art and an important part of the world's artistic treasure trove. As a crystallization of Chinese cultural art, Chinese painting boasts a long history, unique styles, expressive brushwork, and a harmonious blend of form and spirit, making it beloved by people worldwide. The brush, ink, paper, and inkstone, collectively known as the "Four Treasures of the Study," are the primary tools for Chinese painting. Over thousands of years, through the collective efforts and practices of generations of painters, a wealth of brushwork techniques and expressive methods have been summarized, enabling modern Chinese painters to advance the development of Chinese painting art by inheriting traditional practices while incorporating new perspectives.
Chinese painting can be categorized into three major content divisions: figure painting, landscape painting, and flower-and-bird painting. From a technical perspective, it is divided into two main styles: meticulous (gongbi) and freehand (xieyi). Due to the freehand style's characteristics of concise shaping, simplified techniques, unrestrained ink use, and lively ink charm, it is particularly favored by young and middle-aged Chinese painting enthusiasts, as well as many retired elderly who are eager to try their hand at it.
As an introductory textbook for learning Chinese painting, this book focuses on teaching the steps of painting freehand flower-and-bird subjects, striving to achieve a clear and comprehensive presentation with detailed illustrations, step-by-step guidance, rich content, and an easy-to-learn, easy-to-understand approach.
