What is the normal range for newborn jaundice?

Patient's question:

My sister just gave birth to a child today, and the baby has quite severe jaundice. Could you please tell me what the normal range for neonatal jaundice is?

Doctor's answer:

Newborns may experience jaundice again, which is relatively common. The normal value of neonatal jaundice is generally not more than 12 mg/dL for full-term infants and not more than 15 mg/dL for preterm infants. Physiological jaundice will naturally subside, while breast milk jaundice can be resolved by temporarily stopping breastfeeding. Pathological jaundice must be treated promptly to avoid delaying the condition. Patients should develop good daily habits, maintain a regular schedule, avoid smoking and alcohol, and increase physical activity to enhance immunity and prevent recurrence of the condition.
