Particularly noteworthy are his works on the history of academic thought and literary history, which are distinctly contemporary in both form and content, differing significantly from traditional scholarship. When Cai Yuanpei discussed his academic achievements, he remarked: "There are twenty-two works on the discussion of the Five Classics and philology, thirteen on academic thought and literary style, and twenty-four annotated editions of various books. Except for poetry and prose collections, all were written in the fifteen years following the first year of the Republic, demonstrating astonishing diligence and dedication. If you had devoted yourself entirely to scholarship without being distracted by external matters, strengthened your health, and devoted yourself completely to writing, what limits would your achievements have faced? How tragic!" The book we have compiled is a selection from Liu Shipei's complete works, with a focus on the fields of classics and literature.
