Features: Under the circumstances where reforms in the design and art education curriculum system have not yet been carried out top-down or bottom-up, and where radical reforms in higher education have not yet been implemented proactively, using textbook development to align course content with actual social needs, keeping pace with the times, and adjusting for issues within the curriculum system is a reasonable and effective approach. Especially in the current context of an overflow of various textbooks, teaching materials, and even so-called monographs, this approach is particularly necessary and holds significance as a bridge between the past and the future. In light of this, Hunan University Press organized experts and scholars from nearly 30 institutions across the country specializing in design and art to compile this series of textbooks over a period of nearly two years. The primary purpose of this effort is to promote the healthy development of design and art through the compilation and publication of these textbooks. To achieve this goal, experts were organized twice for deliberations to determine the types of textbooks, aiming to establish a textbook system that aligns with the development of the times and the improvement of the discipline. After repeated deliberations, 26 textbooks were selected as the foundational textbooks for design and art education.
This series of textbooks strives to highlight three key features:
1. A distinct design perspective—reflecting the modern characteristics of design, market-oriented, and international trends.
2. A strong sense of the times—new concepts, new content, new materials, and new case studies.
3. Prominent practicality—emphasizing the practical and applied aspects of design, focusing on teaching needs.
In terms of content design, in addition to providing a concise and necessary overview of the development of illustration art in China and abroad and its classification, the focus is placed on how to create illustrations. The book elaborates on the conception, composition, expressive forms, and techniques of illustrations, including traditional painting and computer illustration. The explanations are presented in a visually engaging manner to give readers a clear and intuitive understanding.
The latter part of the book features illustrations for appreciation. Considering the diverse interests, requirements, and styles of readers, as well as the varying themes and expressive techniques, dozens of renowned works from ancient and modern Chinese and foreign artists with different styles, techniques, and forms are selected for readers to study, reference, and draw inspiration from, catering to a wide range of needs.
