Defending is important but also quite difficult; those who are determined can definitely do well. The term "defending" is actually not very appropriate because, in reality, the defending side is actually attacking. The declarer plans to make the contract, building a castle; the defenders aim to defeat the contract, destroying the castle, so the defending side is not really "defending." Now, it has become customary to use this term, and the English word "Defend" also means "" (defending), so we have to follow the convention. However, defending must never be conservative; one must constantly think of attacking in every possible way.
