Features: The 20th century is coming to an end, and the 21st century is stepping towards us. China's modernization is in a crucial historical period. Future international competition will primarily be a competition of comprehensive national strength, talent, and education. Establishing a modern educational concept, philosophy, and implementing quality-oriented education depend on the hard work and creative efforts of millions of teachers at all levels and types of schools, especially class teachers. In the primary stage of socialism, realizing the transition from "exam-oriented education" to "quality-oriented education" places a special historical responsibility on class teachers. They teach and educate; they guide students to explore scientific truths while awakening their awareness to become genuine people; they must be "learned as teachers" and "upright as models." Therefore, it is undeniable that class teacher work holds significant importance and faces particularly arduous tasks in building a socialist educational cause with Chinese characteristics, achieving educational modernization, and implementing quality-oriented education. It should undoubtedly receive special attention from the education community and even the entire society.
The class teacher system is an important component of China's socialist education system. When reviewing the end of the century, it is necessary to fully acknowledge that since the founding of the country, class teacher work in schools at all levels and types has made positive contributions to the construction of socialist spiritual civilization, the improvement of social atmosphere, the establishment of dominant social values, social stability, and the enhancement of the civilized quality of laborers. Through long-term practice, class teacher work has formed distinctive fine traditions and accumulated valuable experience, such as emphasizing political, ideological, and moral education, as well as education in ideals and discipline. It excels in guiding class collective construction and organizing extracurricular activities, upholding the principles of "respecting teachers and loving students" and "teaching with moral integrity." These remain practically guiding in today's context.
On the other hand, it should also be recognized that many schools currently prioritize imparting cultural and scientific knowledge while neglecting to teach students how to be good people. There is a tendency to dislike "preaching" and to overlook the comprehensive guidance and cultivation of students' moral character, aspirations, emotions, and personalities. These issues severely hinder the implementation of "quality-oriented education" and violate the needs of students to develop comprehensively in an active, free, and vibrant manner. Moreover, they deviate from the common trend of countries worldwide, which emphasize the cultivation of students' personalities and the full development of their individuality during the process of educational modernization. This issue should alert school leaders and class teachers to pay attention.
When looking ahead to the educational landscape of the 21st century, we must fully recognize that quality-oriented education is an inevitable requirement of national modernization for the modernization of people and education. Class teacher work must consciously achieve a trans-century transformation in terms of ideological concepts, ways of thinking, and work models.
