Features: The New English Coursebooks, Volume 7 and 8, are designed for senior-year English majors in four-year undergraduate programs. Their primary objective is to cultivate reading skills while also further enhancing language fundamentals and comprehensive English proficiency. Upon completing these textbooks, students should be able to meet the requirements outlined in the senior-year English teaching syllabus for higher education English majors in terms of English knowledge and skills. The principles guiding the compilation of this course are as follows:
1. Adopt an inductive teaching approach to guide students to work independently and think critically, fostering their logical thinking abilities.
2. Select a wide range of materials to broaden students' cultural knowledge and familiarize them with different genres.
3. Include numerous language exercises to reinforce and expand students' linguistic knowledge while continuing to strengthen their language fundamentals.
4. Design exercises of various types to develop comprehensive English skills. At the advanced level, the four core skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—should no longer be treated as isolated (single-skill training) because they are interdependent, interconnected, and mutually influential. Oral discussions should be grounded in reading but can also deepen reading comprehension and improve writing proficiency. Writing ability stems from reading and also contributes to enhancing oral skills. Reading provides the raw material for language and serves as the foundation for advanced language learning. Therefore, while the four skills are trained separately, they essentially form a unified whole in the context of comprehensive language skill development.
