Features: Scars and trauma are closely related; trauma is the cause, and scars are the result. In medicine, especially in the surgical field, treatment often adds surgical trauma to patients while also leaving scars. Everyone suffers from various traumas in their lifetime, so everyone's skin surface bears a variety of scars. Therefore, scars are of great importance in medicine and are also a matter of concern to people. With the development of modern medicine and the improvement of people's lives, more attention has been paid to scars, academic research has deepened, treatment methods have been refined, and specialized institutions and personnel have increased accordingly. Scars, this long-standing topic, have become a new hotspot today. Scars involve all disciplines of medicine, and plastic surgery pays particular attention to them. Every step, from surgical design, incision selection, wound closure to suture removal, is carefully considered to minimize and reduce scar formation, as well as to conceal existing and newly formed scars. Our plastic surgery department has been established for 50 years. Before the reform and opening-up, about two-thirds of the plastic surgery patients we treated were scar patients. After the reform and opening-up, the types of patients changed, but the number of scar patients remained significant. In the past decade, we have also established a specialized scar clinic. As a result, we have accumulated a large number of scar cases and have deepened our understanding of scars, as well as improved our clinical treatment of them. In terms of research, we have invested significant effort, making scars one of our key research topics and achieving some results. Based on this, we are willing to compile our current understanding and existing experience into a book. The contributors to this book are mostly clinical and research personnel at various levels in our department, as well as doctoral and master's students, and colleagues who have worked together on scar clinical and research work. The book is divided into 20 chapters and over 600,000 words, covering four parts. Part 1: Research on the histopathology, cytology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and trace elements of scars and keloids. Part 2: Descriptions of wound healing, the etiology, development, and epidemiology of scar and keloid formation. Part 3: Classification of scars and surgical treatment principles. Part 4: Introduction to various non-surgical treatments for scars and keloids, including their effects and reactions. Much of the content reflects the practical experiences and summaries of the contributors, as well as their perspectives and arguments. Therefore, the book is titled "Practical Scarology," and we hope it will be helpful to a broad readership in clinical diagnosis, treatment, and scientific research. This book is suitable for reference by surgeons, especially those specializing in plastic surgery, aesthetics, burn treatment, and dermatology, as well as medical students and scar patients.
